Emergency Medicine

The USD SSOM Emergency Medicine residency program is a newly accredited 3-year training program starting July 2026 with 6 residents. Training in academic emergency medicine, at a Level 1 Trauma Center, but with a community medicine feel and rural exposure.

Mission

Mission Statement: To provide an outstanding education in Emergency Medicine and expand access to skilled physicians in rural and underserved communities.

  • Creating an educational environment that promotes physician wellness, resiliency, and lifelong learning.
  • Providing exposure to the challenges and advantages of practicing in rural and underserved communities.
  • Advancing the practice of Emergency Medicine in our region through hands on training, clinical research and evidence-based medicine.

Program Curriculum

The Emergency Medicine curriculum encompasses 3 years of training. Our rotation schedule utilizes 13 blocks that are 4 weeks in duration.

Training Sites

Residents train primarily at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD but also have the opportunity for training at Sanford Aberdeen Medical Center, Aberdeen SD.
