Pathology

Our Pathology program provides residents with a challenging curriculum, diverse pathology and plenty of one-on-one attention. Our program is a great place to work and live as a pathology resident, and our recent graduates have all matched with competitive fellowships in surgical pathology, breast pathology, hematopathology, cytopathology and dermatopathology.

Mission

To provide residents a broad, comprehensive pathology background and opportunities to gain experience in all sub-specialties.

Aims

  • Provide a solid foundation in anatomic and clinical pathology in a supportive environment, while offering elective rotations which will support adult learners in tailoring their training to their specific career goals.
  • Train residents to work in teams to help them succeed in inter-professional healthcare environments.
  • Model and encourage consideration of an appropriate work life balance through various activities.

Program Curriculum

The pathology residency curriculum encompasses 4 years of combined anatomic and clinical pathology rotations that are one month in duration.

Why Choose this Program

  • The pathology program has been a great place to train with good exposure in anatomic pathology, work/life balance, helpful faculty members, and in a safe and affordable city to live in.

  • The Pathology program is a nice small program while still seeing several cases and getting great exposure to “bread and butter” as well as “zebra” cases with a nice sense of community and teamwork.

  • Loved my residency here so much that I came back as a staff pathologist after fellowships.

  • The USD Pathology program provides residents with an excellent volume and variety of surgical pathology cases in a smaller program setting. On our hot seat rotation, the residents get to handle all of the frozen section cases, similar to what a fellow would do at other institutions. At our noon surgical pathology conference, the residents get to see all of the interesting surgical pathology cases.

  • Due to our small size, our residents get to take on tasks that are often assigned to fellows at larger institutions. Thus, they are well prepared for any fellowship program that they choose.

Virtual Visits

Our fellows have guided our efforts to present our philosophy of education to you. We have always been told that the in-person visit “seals the deal” and we are hopeful that the “virtual visit” will accomplish the same goal this year.
